Sharon Barnes:

Sharon Barnes is a graduate of the University of Florida and had no formal art instruction until retirement.  Sharon has had the good fortune to study with these amazing women artist: Jane Filer, Sally Sutton, Luna Ray and Nancy Marple, who have not only shared their knowledge and expertise but have given Sharon confidence to try new art forms.

Sharon works in both acrylic and watercolor and represents her subjects in an array of styles from very detailed representational works to abstract. Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the state of North Carolina and Alabama.

"I have been fortunate to find my passion in painting both in acrylic and watercolor. Nature studies are the subjects from which I derive the greatest pleasure. It is exciting to closely observe an animal to get to know its personality through the animal’s eyes and to feel the fur or feathers with my eyes.

As I grow as an artist I find that I “see” more clearly the colors and textures of plants, trees, flowers and the world around us and appreciate the beauty of scenes that I only looked at before."

Our third friday-of-the-month event (May 18 at 6PM to 9PM) will feature Sharon as she graces us with her presence in our art gallery to showcase her work. Light refreshments, good music and great company will also be present. This event is open to the public. Please come and join us.

June 2012

Sunday, June 17, is Father's Day.

Don't forget Dad or that special man in your life this Father's Day. We have shirts, two-piece african outfits, men's jewelry and scented oils that men will enjoy. Or why not buy him a piece of art? We have original paintings by some of the most talented artists in Durham (or anywhere). There are oil and acrylic paintings by Ellie Edwards-Smith, LeGrant Taylor, Sharon Barnes, and watercolors by Judy Fowler (to name a few), as well as original acrylic paintings by Jonas Fasco of Ghana. How about a skin rug or cushion for his Man Cave? We have those too.

We also have hand-made wooded sculptures, wooded masks, brass-pieces and leather-board chess sets, Djembes (African drums), wooded canes and small hand-carved folding tables from the various countries of Africa.  What ever gift you are looking for this Father's Day, we'll be sure to have it.
